Talk:Flash crash

Rename to "flash crash"?

Needs to be moved to flash crash (capitalization). 72.200.151.13 (talk) 13:01, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No it doesn't. See Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Titles#Capitalization. Jason Quinn (talk) 21:58, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing yet here about Navinder Singh Sarao?? Christofurio (talk) 19:43, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Why, is he relevant to each and every flash crash in history? He is mentioned on the 2010 Flash Crash page, where it is relevant. Owen× 22:00, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Definition doesn't apply to currencies

The article defines a flash crash as a type of fall in security prices. The definition of security always includes equities, and usually includes debt instruments and sometimes derivatives. It doesn't, however, include currency. This is a problem, since the two most recent "flash crashes" listed in the article involve nothing but currencies.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the sharp fall is in an exchange rate measured as a ratio between two currencies. The order of the two is arbitrary, so if, for example, the January 15, 2015 Swiss National Bank action was measured as the price of the Swiss Franc expressed in Euro (as it probably should be), it wouldn't be a fall, but surge in price. Is that still a "crash"? The Euro didn't drop as much against other currencies, so the volatility was largely limited to the spike in the Swiss Franc.

So, either the definition in the lede should be expanded to include currencies (and commodities?), and moves in either direction, or we're dealing with two different creatures here. Owen× 04:03, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is brought up in the 2010 Flash Crash page, but is not linked, and it seems like it should at least be mentioned here, so that it can link to this page and remove the quote from the article in the 2010 Flash Crash page as it is now. Blippy1998 (talk) 22:45, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
