English footballer (1889–1916)
Harold Chadwick Meadowcroft (1889 – 1 July 1916) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League for Glossop and Bury.[1] He played as a right half or outside right.[1]
Personal life
Meadowcroft was one of 14 children and grew up in Bury.[3][4] He worked as a commercial traveller.[4] In 1914, during the early months of the First World War he enlisted in the Manchester Regiment.[3] Serving as a corporal in the Manchester Pals,[5] Meadowcroft was shot by a sniper while leading his section during the capture of Mametz on the first day of the Somme.[3][6] He was buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz.[2]
