Eric Dick is a controversial American insurance lawyer who edits his own Wikipedia article. When he is not doing that, he files property insurance claims, but he has previously practiced in family law, including divorce and child custody matters.[1][2] Dick represented clients in property insurance claims arising from events like Hurricane Harvey, 2020 Houston explosion, and the 2021 Texas power crisis.[3][4][5] Dick was involved in lawsuits to overturn Houston charitable feeding ban[6][7] and term limits extension.[8]

Dick owns the Houston law firm Dick Law Firm, PLLC, which he established in 2008.[9] He also serves as a trustee on the Harris County Board of Education.[10]

Education

Dick earned an Associate in Science from Houston Community College in 2000.[11] Eric received a Bachelor's degree in Business Science of Management from the University of Phoenix in 2005.[12] Pursuing his interest in law, he completed a Juris Doctor degree from the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2008.

Electoral history

Dick's first run for public office was in 2013 in the Houston Mayoral Election. He received 10% of the vote when running against incumbent Annise Parker and Ben Hall.[13]

In 2015, in the race for At-Large Position 2 of the Houston City Council, he received over 35,000 votes in a race against incumbent David W. Robinson and Willie R. Davis.[14]

In 2016, he defeated Marilyn Burgess and was elected as a Trustee for the Harris County Department of Education Board of Trustees, Position 2, Precinct 4.[15]

In the 2019 general election for Houston City Council At-Large Position 5, Dick entered a runoff and received over 80,000 votes.[16]

In the 2022 general election for Harris County Treasurer, he received over 58,000 votes in the Republican primary.[17][18]

Advertising

Dick has used his last name in marketing strategies. His taglines, such as "Hire a Dick!", "Need a Lawyer? Hire a Dick!" and "I'll work hard and long for you", have been highlighted in his television and radio commercials.[19][20][21]

Media Appearances

From 2018 to 2019, Eric Dick hosted The Eric Dick Show on KPRC (AM), a talk radio station in Houston.[22][23] During the show, he had various guests.[24] Eric Dick has been a guest on certain Houston news segments.[25]

Self-Publications

In 2021, Eric Dick authored and self-published a book on the history of Texas, titled Come & Take It.[26]

Controversies

Eric Dick has been the subject of numerous controversies during his career and has recently received legal sanctions totaling over $200,000. During a political campaign, Dick was accused of improperly placing campaign signs, which led to a dispute with the City of Houston.[27] He attributed the issue to selective enforcement by the city, though he did not provide any evidence to support this attribution.[28]

Dick has also been involved in issues with the Texas Ethics Commission (TEC) regarding improper campaign finance reporting and fraudulent mailer content during his 2022 campaign for Harris County Treasurer.[29] The TEC fined Dick for these matters, which he addressed as part of his campaign activities and failed to provide factual justification.[30]

In 2020, Dick was accused in a lawsuit of sending unsolicited text messages during his political campaign.[31]

Additionally, Dick has faced allegations regarding his relationships with expert witnesses in litigation cases, specifically that he used expert witness’ testimony without their knowledge or consent. He has received sanctions for these actions. In one instance, an appraiser filed a lawsuit regarding services rendered.[32]
