Wat Khao Or (วัดเขาอ้อ) is a public Buddhist temple belonging to the Mahānikāya sect. It is located in Makok Nuea Subdistrict, Khuan Khanun District, Phatthalung Province. Wat Khao Or was established in 1651 CE and received royal grant of the sīmā (consecrated boundary) in 1661 CE, with the sīmā measuring 15 metres wide by 20 metres long. It is said that Wat Khao Or was formerly a renowned Brahmanical hermitage of the Diśāpāmok lineage, known as the Khao Or Hermitage. Several kings sent their children and grandchildren to study various fields of knowledge under Brahmin teachers from India.[1] According to legend, the knowledge taught at the Takshashila Khao Or Hermitage was divided into two branches: one concerning dharmashastra (laws and governance), city-building, and livelihood; the other dealing with rituals, occult sciences, and traditional medicine.[2] Historical records from the Royal Letter of the Governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat state that in 2284 BE (1741 CE), during the reign of King Borommakot of Ayutthaya, Phra Maha Intharacha from Pattani became the abbot and undertook major restoration of the temple. Lay leaders Tapa Khao, Khun Kaeo Sena, and Khun Sri Sombat supervised the lay community in the repairs.[3] Together they built the ubosot (ordination hall), mondop, replica Buddha footprint, reclining Buddha, stupa, and received two Buddha images as royal gifts from King Borommakot. Every abbot of Wat Khao Or is believed to have been an expert in occult arts, renowned for invulnerability (kong kraphan chadtri), traditional medicine—especially the use of medicinal plants (wan)—and related rituals. Unique ceremonies of the Khao Or lineage include the “soaking of medicinal plants” and the “cooking of black sticky rice.” Notable structures include traditional Thai-style monks’ quarters (kuti). Sacred objects include a bronze Buddha image (Luang Pho Im), a silver Buddha image (Luang Pho Dok Maduea), a gold-painted plaster reclining Buddha, and a bronze replica of the Buddha’s footprint in Rattanakosin style.[4]
