Scotch Mist is an American indie rock band based in New York City, New York. The band consists of vocalist Ed Zighelboim, guitarist Fern Souza, and bassist and producer Gianluca Girard.[1]
[2]
The band has released four studio albums: Scotch Mist (2016), Gold & Silver (2019), crybaby (2021), and Cabo Blanco (2023).
History
Scotch Mist was formed in 2016 by brothers Ed Zighelboim and Andres Zighelboim, and later expanded into a trio with guitarist Fern Souza and bassist and producer Gianluca Girard.
Girard joined the group in 2019 following a live performance with the band. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zighelboim and Girard exchanged demos that became the basis of the band's 2021 album crybaby.
crybaby
Released in 2021, crybaby was written following the death of Zighelboim's girlfriend, Lydia Touchton, in 2019. According to the band, the album focused on themes of grief, loss, and healing.[3]
In November 2022, the band released crybaby b-sides, a collection of tracks that had not made the cut onto crybaby.[4]
Cabo Blanco
The band's fourth studio album, Cabo Blanco, was independently released on August 1, 2023.
According to the band, the album emerged from a collaborative writing process between Zighelboim, Souza, and Girard that produced dozens of songs between 2021 and 2023.
The album represented a stylistic shift from crybaby, incorporating influences from Brazilian music, disco, soul, and psychedelic pop.
Musical style
Scotch Mist's music has been described as incorporating elements of indie rock, disco, soul, electronica, Brazilian music, yacht rock, and Japanese city pop.
The band has cited influences including Steely Dan, Tears for Fears, The Police, Marcos Valle, Nick Drake, Milton Nascimento, Lo Borges, and Gilberto Gil.
