Scotch Mist was formed in 2016 by brothers Ed Zighelboim and Andres Zighelboim, and later expanded into a trio with guitarist Fern Souza and bassist and producer Gianluca Girard.

Girard joined the group in 2019 following a live performance with the band. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zighelboim and Girard exchanged demos that became the basis of the band's 2021 album crybaby.

Released in 2021, crybaby was written following the death of Zighelboim's girlfriend, Lydia Touchton, in 2019. According to the band, the album focused on themes of grief, loss, and healing.^[3]
