PestVets is an interest group and professional council within the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) dedicated to the recruitment, transition, and support of military veterans within the pest management industry. The organization acts as a bridge between the United States Armed Forces and the professional pest control sector, promoting the industry as a viable and rewarding career path for transitioning service members.[1]
Mission and objectives
The core mission of PestVets is to provide veterans with professional opportunities and a supportive community as they transition to civilian life. The organization operates on several strategic pillars:
Veteran Recruitment: Actively promoting the pest management industry to veterans, highlighting the alignment between military skill sets—such as discipline, technical proficiency, and operational planning—and the requirements of pest management professionals.
Professional Transition: Assisting veterans in navigating the transition from military service to civilian employment through networking, mentorship, and industry-specific training.
Advocacy and Recognition: Raising awareness within the pest management community regarding the value veterans bring to the workforce and recognizing companies that demonstrate a commitment to veteran hiring and support.
Community Engagement: Organizing philanthropic efforts and community service projects that benefit veterans and their families, often collaborating with veterans' service organizations.
Structure and units
PestVets is organized into various state units, which allow for localized advocacy and recruitment efforts. These units work in conjunction with the national NPMA framework to implement PestVets' mission at the state and regional levels. Member companies that join these units commit to fostering a veteran-friendly workplace and participating in the organization's outreach initiatives.
Activities
The organization participates in several annual events and initiatives, including:
PestVets Day: A day of service or recognition typically held during major industry conferences like PestWorld.
Veteran of the Year Award: An annual recognition given to a veteran who has made significant contributions to the pest management industry and their community.
Hiring Initiatives: Partnering with organizations like "Hiring Our Heroes" to connect veterans directly with employers in the pest control sector.
