Pensions Management Institute

The Pensions Management Institute (PMI) is the United Kingdom’s leading professional body for pensions professionals who manage UK pension schemes. Established in 1976, the PMI supports over 8,000 members across 32 countries, including consultants, administrators, trustees, and managers responsible for overseeing pension schemes with assets exceeding £1 trillion. It works to educate pension professionals, empower pension leaders and enable better saver outcomes.

History

The PMI was founded in June 1976 by four key organisations:

  • The National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF) – now Pensions UK[1]
  • The Society of Pension Consultants (SPC) – now the Society of Pension Professionals[2]
  • The Association of Consulting Actuaries[3] (ACA)
  • The Life Insurance Council of the Association of British Insurers[4] (ABI)

These bodies recognised the need for a dedicated institute to set educational and professional standards for those managing UK pension schemes. The first PMI examinations were held in 1978, in collaboration with the Chartered Insurance Institute.
