Draft:Meowl

Bubo virginianus is nicknamed as a "Cat-Owl" due to its resemblance to a cat from afar.

Meowl, also known as Cat Owl or Owl Cat, is an internet meme and fictional hybrid creature depicted with the head of a cat and the body of an owl. The image is generally associated with a 2013 Photoshop edit posted on Weibo by the user zhumaokele, which used the face of the Chinese internet cat Melonpi, also known as Guapi, on an owl body.[1] The creature circulated online during the 2010s through image-sharing and humour websites, before receiving renewed attention on TikTok and X in the mid-2020s.[1]

Terminology

The Owl and the Pussy‐cat by Edward Lear (1871)

The Chinese word for owl, 貓頭鷹 / 猫头鹰 (māo tóu yīng), written Chinese lists the components as 猫 "cat," 头 "head," and 鹰 "eagle/falcon/hawk."

Before the emergence of Meowl as an internet meme, “cat owl” had appeared in English-language natural-history writing as a common name for horned owls, especially the great horned owl. Nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century sources used "Cat Owl" for Bubo virginianus, apparently because its prominent ear tufts and facial appearance suggested a cat.
