Community Cousins is a 501(c)3 organization designed to provide people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds a ready opportunity to develop a personal stake in each other's lives. Community Cousins offers an innovative approach to preventing prejudice, simple but effective.
History
The group was founded in 1992 in the San Diego area by Diane Birnie Bock, wife of Larry Bock, as a response to her concern about the riots following the verdict in the case involving Rodney King.
How it works
Families of different races are matched up. They initially meet at an all-Cousins gathering. Then they are encouraged to interact in any way that fits into their lifestyles and time schedules and are invited to fun get-togethers with clusters of Cousins families. They may attend each others' birthday parties and ball games. They may go to the movies together or meet for pizza. They may share favorite recipes. Some pass along items such as Halloween costumes, high chairs, books and toys. And, in the process, a thread of friendship is woven through their lives. Once total strangers, they gradually get to genuinely know and care about each other. Barriers have gone up between people brick by brick, and that's how they must come down: one person at a time.
Results
Community Cousins’ San Diego location has included over 350 families since 1992, many having joined at the very beginning, and is now serving a new generation. The YMCA, NCCJ and Harvard’s student volunteer group have offered Community Cousins programs through the years, serving hundreds of additional families. Participants are grateful for opportunities to make real friends who feel like real cousins and who share a commitment to getting past racial stereotypes and promoting connections that are more than skin deep.
Recognition
Community Cousins has been the subject of articles in Oprah Magazine, USA Today, Family Circle, San Diego Reader and the San Diego Union Tribune. It was twice selected by Vice President Gore to be featured at his Family Re-Union Conference in Nashville[1] and featured by the Clinton administration's "One America" initiative.[2]
