Bleez is an anti-heroine and supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Geoff Johns and artist Shane Davis, the character first appears in Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns #1 (December 2008).[1]

Publication history

Created by writer Geoff Johns and Shane Davis, she made her first appearance in Final Crisis: Rage of the Red Lanterns #1 (December 2008), and has since featured prominently in several other Green Lantern related titles, especially in the Green Lantern: New Guardians series. She started out as a ruthless, feral villain but over time has gained control of her powers and become more of an anti-hero, occasionally siding with heroes such as the Green Lanterns.

She is one of the foremost members of the Red Lantern Corps, who was inducted after being abused and tortured by the Sinestro Corps, which also resulted in her wings being cut off. In the rebooted DC Comics universe of 2011's "The New 52", Bleez joined representatives of the seven Lantern Corps to form "The New Guardians", led by White Lantern Kyle Rayner. At times, Bleez has opposed Red Lantern Corps leader Atrocitus, and has even fought him for control of the Corps. In spite of this, she is a loyal member of the Red Lanterns, and usually serves as one of Atrocitus' chief enforcers.

Fictional character biography

Bleez before she became a Red Lantern, as depicted in Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #2 (2009)

Bleez is a princess of the planet Havania, renowned for her great beauty. Many men seek her hand, but she rejects them all, often in a rude and abrasive manner. In response, two of her suitors meet with Sinestro Corps member Baron Ghazz and tempt him with stories of Bleez's beauty. He kidnaps Bleez, kills her mother, and takes her to Ranx the Sentient City. There, the Sinestro Corps torture and rape Bleez and remove her wings before her rage attracts a Red Lantern ring, enabling her to escape.

Subsequently, Bleez becomes an enemy and occasional ally of the Green Lantern Corps. Additionally, Atrocitus immerses her in the Blood Ocean of Ysmault, restoring her mind, and works with her to hunt down and kill Ghazz.[2]

After Krona's body disappears from Ysmault, Atrocitus attacks Bleez, believing her to be responsible. She holds her own against him, causing the other Red Lanterns to realize that Atrocitus is losing his rage and focus.[3] Bleez seizes control of the Corps and leads them in tracking down Sinestro.[4]

After Abysmus poisons the Red Lantern central power battery, Bleez returns to Ysmault with her Red Lanterns, briefly coming into conflict with Atrocitus. After Atrocitus reasserts leadership over the Corps, Bleez confronts the Star Sapphires, whom she believes to be responsible for the battery's destruction.[5][6] She is captured and nearly converted into a Star Sapphire before Atrocitus kills Abysmus, enabling Bleez to escape.[7][8]

In Rise of the Third Army, the Third Army attacks the Red Lanterns on the planet Arhtky.[9] While Atrocitus rallies the Corps to confront the Guardians and the First Lantern, he orders Rankorr to return to Earth and kill Baxter, the man responsible for his transformation into a Red Lantern. Rankorr hesitates to kill Baxter, so Bleez does so with her napalm blood.[10] Bleez then attacks Rankorr and attempts to take his blood so she can gain the ability to create light constructs. However, she is defeated and returns to Atrocitus.[11][12][13]

In DC Rebirth, Bleez accompanies the Red Lantern Corps to Earth in an attempt to terraform it. However, she is defeated by Jessica Cruz and goes into hiding.

Powers and abilities

Bleez’s rage plasma (napalm)

As a Red Lantern, Bleez possesses the ability to generate red energy blasts and force fields. She additionally possesses fiery, corrosive blood that can be regurgitated as an offensive weapon and damage other power rings. Since the ring has replaced her heart, she cannot remove it without risking death by cardiac arrest. She is also vulnerable to blue and violet light, which can reverse the effects of a red ring. Due to being immersed in the Blood Ocean of Ysmault, she has regained her intellect and memories, unlike many of the other Red Lanterns.
