Asia Muhammad (born April 4, 1991) is an American professional tennis player who is a doubles specialist.[ 1] She has been ranked as high as world No. 14 in doubles by the WTA , achieved on 28 October 2024, and No. 124 in singles, achieved on 24 April 2017.
Muhammad has won eleven doubles titles on the WTA Tour , five doubles titles on the Challenger Tour , and 14 singles and 35 doubles titles on the ITF Circuit . She has reached a WTA 1000 final, at the 2022 Indian Wells Open with Ena Shibahara . She also reached the semifinals of a major at the 2020 US Open and won two WTA 500 titles, at the 2023 Adelaide International 1 and the 2024 Washington Open , all partnering with Taylor Townsend .[ 2] As a result, she reached a new career-high doubles ranking of world No. 24 on 12 August 2024.
Early life
Muhammad was born in Long Beach, California , to Ron Holmes and Faye Muhammad.[ 3] Ron Holmes was a 6-foot-5-inch (1.96 m) standout, four-year starting point guard for the USC Trojans men's basketball program in the 1980s. Muhammad's mother, Faye, was a point guard and track star at Long Beach State .[ 3] [ 4]
She is the oldest of three children. One brother, Shabazz Muhammad , is a professional basketball player, who played for five seasons in the NBA .[ 3] [ 5] [ 6]
An uncle, Stephone Paige , played nine seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with 377 career receptions . Her aunt, Robin Holmes-Sullivan , was a four-year starter for Cal State Fullerton 's basketball team.[ 4]
Early career and coaching
Muhammad is coached by NCAA champion Tim Blenkiron , owner of the NO QUIT Tennis Academy where Asia trains. Blenkiron started coaching her when she was a child in Andre Agassi's TEAM AGASSI tennis and education program in Las Vegas, where she developed into a top junior player. Her first big break was reaching the finals of the Tennis Channel Open at the age of 16.[citation needed ]
