Cal Poly competed in the Western Football Conference (WFC). The Mustangs were led by third-year head coach Jim Sanderson and played home games at Mustang Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California. They finished the season with a record of six wins and four losses (6–4, 2–1 WFC). Overall, the team outscored its opponents 197–90 for the season.

^Gary Meyer (Bakersfield CA) ran for a Big 71 yd TD against Sacramento first game of the season. "I just broke and never looked back " Gary said . Gary says "I'm ready for this season, it's just the beginning to a great season, WATCH ME !". "One mustang who is ready for this season" said the head coach. He is a great player and a great asset to this team and definitely a team leader.
