Sitrulina adalah asam amino α. Nama asam amino in berasal dari bahasa Latin sitrulus yang merupakan sebutan untuk buah semangka. Senyawa ini pertama kali diisolasi pada tahun 1914 oleh Koga & Odake dari buah yang sama.[2]
Asam amino ini terbentuk dalam sintesis arginina dari ornitina[3]
