Sclerophrys adalah genus "kodok sejati" dalam famili Bufonidae yang berasal dari Afrika dan Semenanjung Arab bagian selatan.[1][2] Awalnya, semua spesies ini dimasukkan ke dalam genus Bufo. Genus ini, yang semula bernama Amietophrynus, dipisahkan karena adanya perbedaan taksonomi yang cukup besar.[3] Pada tahun 2016, Ohler dan Dubois menunjukkan bahwa Sclerophrys capensis Tschudi, 1838 adalah spesies yang sama dengan Bufo regularis rangeri Hewitt, 1935, yang merupakan spesies tipe dari Amietophrynus. Karena nama yang pertama lebih tua, maka implikasinya adalah Amietophrynus menjadi sinonim junior dari Sclerophrys.[4][1]
