SN 1998bu

SN 1998bu adalah supernova tipe Ia yang ditemukan di galaksi M96 pada 9 Mei 1998 dan ditemukan oleh astronom amatir Italia Mirko Villi. Ini adalah salah satu kejadian tipe Ia terdekat di zaman modern karena tidak ada hidrogen dan terdapat helium dalam spektrumnya, cakupan temporer yang baik telah dicapai. Spektrum memberikan bukti langsung untuk setidaknya 0,4 massa matahari besi hadir di ejekta supernova.[1][2][3]

Supernova ini terletak sekitar 1 menit busur di utara M96 dan sekitar mag. 13,5, dan merupakan yang pertama ditemukan di galaksi ini. Sekitar 500 hari setelah ledakan, kurva cahaya dari SN 1998bu tiba-tiba menjadi rata, dan pada saat yang sama spektrum berubah dari emisi nebular tipikal menjadi kontinum biru dengan fitur absorpsi jelas dan emisi jelas yang mengingat pada spektrum awal SN di awal. Supernova ini adalah yang pertama diamati oleh penulis saat ini dengan matanya sendiri, ketika tampak hampir seterang setengah pusat M96 dan kecerahan supernova adalah 12.0 +/- 0.1 pada saat itu.[3][4][5]
