Richborough berdiri di ujung selatan Selat Wantsum. Selat ini memberikan jalur laut yang aman dari benua ke muara sungai Thames dan memisahkan pulau Thanet dari daratan.
Richborough merupakan pelabuhan penting dan merupakan tempat pendaratan tentara Romawi di Britania pada tahun 43.[1]
