Glycymeris, nama umumnya kabatbat, adalah genus kerang air asin, moluska kerang laut dalam keluarga Glycymerididae. [1]

Etimologi

Nama genusnya berasal dari kata Yunani Kuno glykymaris (mungkin dari Glykys (manis) dan Meris (bagian)), sebuah kata yang hanya tercatat satu kali dalam literatur Yunani.

Catatan fosil

Kerang kabatbat ini sangat umum sebagai fosil, dari periode Kapur di zaman Valangian (antara 140,2 ± 3,0 juta tahun yang lalu dan 136,4 ± 2,0 juta tahun yang lalu). Fosil cangkang moluska ini dapat ditemukan di seluruh dunia. Genus Glycymeris mencakup sekitar 100 spesies yang punah. [2] [3]

Keterangan

Cangkang kerang kabatbat umumnya bikonveks, dengan katup berbentuk bulat yang sama, dan sedikit lebih panjang daripada lebarnya. Ukurannya bervariasi dari sedang hingga besar. Ligamen luaran tidak mempunyai garis melintang. Kerang ini merupakan pengumpan suspensi infaunal yang bergerak secara fakultatif.

Habitat

Mereka tersebar luas di dasar laut dangkal yang terdiri dari sedimen berbutir heterogen.
