Janet Werker

Janet F. Werker OC FRSC merupakan peneliti di bidang psikologi perkembangan. Ia meneliti dasar pemerolehan bahasa pada bayi monolingual dan bilingual di Infant Studies Centre, University of British Columbia. Penelitiannya menjadi acuan di bidang ini, menunjukkan bahwa proses belajar bahasa dimulai sejak awal masa bayi, bahkan sebelum lahir, dan dipengaruhi oleh pengalaman selama tahun pertama kehidupan.
Werker menyelesaikan Ph.D. di bidang psikologi dari University of British Columbia pada 1982.[1] Ia menjabat sebagai Canada Research Chair dan Killam Professor di kampus yang sama, serta menerima SSHRC Gold Medal tahun 2015.[2] Pada 29 Desember 2017, Werker dianugerahi gelar Officer of the Order of Canada atas kontribusinya yang diakui secara internasional dalam memahami persepsi ujaran dan pemerolehan bahasa pada bayi.[5]
Tahun 2019, ia terpilih sebagai salah satu penerima William James Fellow Award dari Association for Psychological Science.[3] Pada 2020, Werker terpilih sebagai anggota National Academy of Sciences.[4]
Biografi
Werker meraih gelar BA di bidang psikologi dan hubungan sosial dari Harvard University pada 1974.[5] Ia kemudian melanjutkan studi pascasarjana di University of British Columbia di bawah bimbingan Richard Tees. Minatnya terhadap pemerolehan bahasa dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan di Vancouver, di mana mayoritas anak tumbuh di keluarga bilingual.
Werker terpilih sebagai Fellow Royal Society of Canada, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, serta Association for Psychological Science.
